What is ChatGPT?

When you ask OpenAI’s Chat GPT what it is, it will generate a response similar to “ChatGPT (Generative Pre-Trained Transformer) is a large scale artificial intelligence language model, based on the transformer architecture and is trained on text data to generate human-like responses to natural language inputs”.

Confused? Here’s that in simpler terms.

ChatGPT is an AI chat system where users are able to generate human-like responses to conversational prompts, questions or commands. The product is able to carry out conversations in a human-like way due to its language model being processed and trained on 45TB of text data.

The capabilities are endless with ChatGPT. Its use of deep learning techniques and training based on a diverse range of data, including books, articles, websites and multiple other sources of written text means that it is continuously improving.

Where is it being used now?

ChatGPT is being used by a wide range of individuals and organisations for various applications. As technology evolves and improves, its usage is expected to become even more prevalent in different industries. Since its release back in November 2022, the internet at large has been putting the model through its paces to see just how flexible and human-like it can be. Some have come to the conclusion that it will reduce the need for or even replace some people in many skilled jobs, including software engineering, marketing, paralegal work, data entry/processing, and even content creation.

Other examples of companies and industries utilising it include:
Customer service: Companies such as Mastercard are using ChatGPT to create automated chatbots for customer service
Education: language learning applications can help students improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills.
Healthcare: chatbots can provide support and information to patients, as well as assist doctors in diagnosing and treating medical conditions.

If this all sounds far-fetched and you haven’t tried ChatGPT, we suggest you test it out and see why The New York Times called the tool a “highly capable linguistic superbrain.”

So let’s get into it. What does this all mean for recruiters and the recruitment industry?

Utilising ChatGPT in technology recruitment

Can recruiters use ChatGPT to take on the job’s more repetitive, laborious parts? Can it tackle recruiting fundamentals like writing job descriptions, emails and scheduling interviews? Can it open up more time for people to focus on the more strategic and profoundly human aspects of recruiting?

The answer is yes.

The model may simultaneously create the space for recruiters and hiring teams to focus on building relationships, advising hiring managers and C-suite leaders, or negotiating with the best candidates and making the close – streamlining the hiring process.

Recruiters can ask ChatGPT to create interview questions for specific roles, facilitate hard conversations with hiring managers, craft Boolean search strings, screen resumes, draft candidate outreach messages and explore salary benchmarking data. The list goes on and on and is mostly limited by your imagination.

ChatGPT can potentially have an impact on recruitment in several ways. Here are a few possibilities:

  1. Screening candidates: ChatGPT can automate the initial screening of job applications. Create a set of questions that ChatGPT will ask candidates, and then use the responses to filter out those who don’t meet the requirements for the job.
  2. Providing information: ChatGPT can instantly provide information for recruiters to send to potential candidates about a role, the company, its culture, and the hiring process. This can help to attract more qualified candidates and also reduce the time taken to answer common candidate questions.
  3. Scripting conversations
Recruiters can ask ChatGPT to create dialogues between stakeholders. For example, if you prompt “create a dialogue between a hiring manager with unrealistic expectations and a recruiter who is trying to explain to the hiring manager that they need to be flexible in their hiring requirements”, you’ll see similar results to below:
  4. Crafting job descriptions
ChatGPT can make standardised job descriptions provided by clients and make them more engaging, without the recruiter having to spend time doing it themselves. Take a look at the generated response we got from inputting a generic IT project Manager job description and asking to “make more interesting”.
  5. Augmented decision-making: ChatGPT can provide data-driven insights and recommendations to hiring teams based on its analysis of candidate responses and other recruitment data. This can help to support more informed decision-making throughout the recruitment process.
  6. Writing emails to candidates: ChatGPT can create content from a single sentence for an email. A very basic prompt without specific details about experience, company, industry, and job can create a ‘fluffy’ yet detailed email, but it does the bodywork for the recruiter to make it more personalised.
  7. Writing boolean search strings: They may be simple, but ChatGPT can create a boolean search string based on the recruiter’s prompts and requirements to enter into the CRM. Although this is probably a task that won’t be commonly replaced by AI anytime soon, some technical requirements may be missed by AI, requiring human input/ personalisation.
  8. Interview Questions: Inputting “create difficult interview questions for a Javascript programmer” can produce useful results.

       9. Bias reduction: ChatGPT can be trained to recognize and eliminate bias in job postings, candidate screening, and interviewing. This can help to create a more diverse and inclusive hiring process.

Why recruitment will always need the best human for the job

Your individuality, specialism and knowledge as a recruiter is a key influencing factor in your success. AI does not have your experience and insights to match candidates with companies into their dream roles. Networking with candidates and clients is essential to building relationships to truly understand requirements and expectations on both sides.

ChatGPT and AI has presented a huge opportunity for recruiters to automate and shorten the time and effort required for standardised tasks. Will the platform reduce the need for humans or replace people in specific roles? Possibly, however, the human touch needed for recruitment will always be needed. The real opportunity here is how technology like ChatGPT can augment recruiter capabilities and evolve their roles. Anything that saves recruiters time while not compromising the quality of their hires/process should absolutely be considered.

Overall, ChatGPT has the potential to make recruitment more efficient, effective, and inclusive. However, it is important to ensure that its use is transparent and ethical and that it does not replace human judgment and decision-making entirely.
